Bembel With Care (from the German word for a cider pitcher) makes a few different ciders and cider-like drinks; this Apfelwein Cola would seem to count as a “cider-like drink”, but we tried to reserve judgement until we tried it. The can lists the ingredients as 65% Apfelwein and 35% “caffeinated soda”. It comes in 500mL cans, and it’s 4% ABV.
- Sweetness: 3.5/5
- Bubbliness: 2/5
- Complexity: 2.5/5
- Tannin: Cola/5
- Temperature: Fridge (35°F)
Nose: Mostly cola.
Flavor: Tart and cola-ey, with some bitterness and a hint of brown sugar. Not as sweet as a regular cola soda. Not much trace of apple flavor.
Finish: Tart and a little bitter.
Overall: Gives the impression of a “soda for grownups”, but the cider part really gets lost. A pleasant novelty, but not really cider.
Cola forward, not as sweet or bubbly as I was expecting for a cola/cider mix. Some interesting cola flavor notes, very hard to pick out the cider. Sweet is tempered a bit by cola, but you can’t really call it tannic or balance. Not boring but more weird than interesting to me, not really a big cola drinker.
